i read some posts back that this is an LCD problem? can it only display 16-bit color? I purchased this notebook thinking that it could display 24-bit. saw on the specs of this unit that 800x600@24bit LCD was possible. False advertising?

Hope you guys could clear this up for me. viewing movies and pictures on Latitude LS series is really awful.

UPDATE: Did some tests

-attached ls500 to an external monitor and viewed the same picture.

800X600@16bit (smooth)
800X600@24bit (smooth)

Does this mean that an ls latitude series LCD is only capable of displaying 256 colors? Can the LCD be replaced with one that displays real 24-bit or at least 16? I really don't like seeing images in "picture art".

And I thought that Neomagic was the culprit.

Bummer! i just found out that an LS LCD supports only 800 x 600; 262,144 colors (18bit)

http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/Systems/latls/en/ug/specs.htm#video

which displays color horribly. I guess that I'll be sticking with this unit until i could get a better replacement. Sad, this lil machine would have been perfect save for the ugly display. I got tricked into beliving that an LS supports 800X600@24bit . its only good for office work, bad choice if you choose an LS for viewing/editing pictures taken from a digital camera or viewing movies on VCD/DVD. All that processing power gone to waste, Dell should have stopped at LS400.

compared my video with another h500st, there was a great difference in color quality, mine had color banding displaying gradient colors while the other unit had none. So i concluded that there was something wrong with my display. Had my unit checked. The culprit? was a loose connector! now, the color depth on my dell is great, looking at the picture above without the color banding is quite rewarding.

Now im one happy camper.

..and successfully installed Mandrake Linux on a different drive partition and got all the devices working on linux.
